SEN Drama

Weekly SEN Drama sessions for 1 hour

SWP Drama for SEN: Weekly sessions of stimulating and enjoyable drama games and activities that are tailored to the special needs of your pupils can take place in your hall or if preferred, in the comfort of a classroom. Our sessions are sensory and colourful and designed with an emphasis on kinaesthetic delivery. Each session is themed and works on building confidence and active participation at the pace of the group. The theme can correlate with the current topic being studied at school if preferred.

The children can follow a scheme of work from a picture book which will encourage movement and dialogue. Examples are Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. Using these texts loosely, lesson plans are created on a weekly basis to encourage creativity through movement, dialogue and gentle exercises that develop confidence and strength in speech development, interacting with others and clearer self expression.

We end each session with calming exercises that encourage gentle breathing and relaxing movements.

Extracurricular Enrichment Drama for SEN Club

SWP Drama Club SEN: Extracurricular Drama sessions run at the end of the school day. The children are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and begin with ‘News Circle’. Whilst snacking on a healthy treat, we discuss a news item together from each individual. This can be as minimal or as descriptive as the individual prefers, it can be aided with a visual or personal item and the exercise works to actively engage everybody in a social and informal ice breaker.

Thereafter, we use a physical warm up to get the group moving followed by a vocal warm up and then a physical game or two. A box of props can be used to engage the kinaesthetic learner to take an everyday object and use it in an unusual way. Modelled first by the facilitator, the children work with a prop of their choice and display an alternative use (it is not expected to be ‘correct’, just alternative). An example of this is using a toilet roll holder as a telescope or using a spoon as a microphone.

Our engaging Drama games are an exploration of the literary world where we discover different themes, worlds and interests using our imaginations. We encourage the children to think beyond what we can see and to push the boundaries of their everyday through movement, speech and Drama.
